The ‘Microsurgical Techniques’ course started in May 2013 as a result from the fruitful cooperation between several departments such as hand and plastic surgery, transplantation surgery, as well as EBM and the faculty of Natural Science. This course is part of a multidisciplinary program and is mainly addressed to surgeons who are willing to learn the fundamental techniques in microsurgery.
Most interested in the field are certainly hand, plastic, ENT and vascular surgeons, but the course is open to all candidates that conduct daily work related to microvascular or nerve surgery.
The course is mainly practical and participants will have the opportunity to face all the challenges involved in microsurgery, learning how to dissect and suture vessels and nerves of about 1mm in diameter. Lectures throughout the week will give the basic information necessary to understand the correct approach to the microscope, to the microinstruments, and to the delicate tissue structures that are to be used for training in a living rat model.
All the animals will receive anesthesia and appropriate care by specialized personnel.
In a spacious laboratory at the Surgical and Anatomical Training center (Kirurgisk Anatomisk Träningscentrum, KAT) in Göteborg we provide eight working stations, each fitted with an operating microscope and a broad range of microsurgical instruments. Instructors are all surgeons or researchers who regularly work in the field of microsurgery both clinically and experimentally and are available to help the students during the entire course. New models for evaluation and improvement of the students throughout the course are now tested and are aimed to give a quick feedback for a rapid improvement from day one to day five.
The course is held once a year, and accepts international students. Leading international or Scandinavian guest lecturers are frequently invited to lecture on specific topics related to both training and clinical cases.
If you are interested in particular training settings such as free flap models or different suture techniques the practical program may be re-adapted to your needs.
Tuition fee is 19000 SEK (as of January 2024).
